Video  Horrific storm approaching Melchior Islands.
13 February 2005 - Around 5:00am, the next storm hit the Kotick and I was being rudely awakened. The sound of the wind was horrific with wind speeds up to 55kt.

At 8:30, suddenly a loud noise woke everybody up. Smoke everywhere in the cabin. I tried to open the upper deck window, sea water splashed in, the waves were 5-6m high. Then I heart Alain saying: 'It's just the exhaust tube that has exploded.' In fact, due to the extreme tilt position of the boat, sea water blocked the exit of the tube and the pression rised up much too high.

Alain had the engine running in addition to the sails as the wind direction was not favorable to our SE course to Melchior Islands. We managed to fix the damaged tube as we definitely need the engine later and for the return.

For Alain and Claudine these repetitive bad weather conditions were not common in their previous voyages through the Drake Passage.

Finally land ahead and it's white, totally white. We can already distinguish Brabant Island with it's top reaching 2522m. We anchor the Kotick in a beautyful bay at 10:30pm at Melchior Islands, an archipel, formerly used as an ancient whaling station.

Another good thing about today is Wick's birthday, he has got 60 on this arrival to Antarctica day.
